Assignment Filing, Chain of Title & Notice of Recordation Review

The USPTO does not conduct title searches. It records whatever meets the minimum formal requirements of the recordation rules, which means verifying the accuracy of an ownership chain is entirely the applicant's responsibility. A defective chain can sit unnoticed in the public record for years until it surfaces at the worst possible moment: financing due diligence, an acquisition, or standing to sue. We treat assignment recordation as more than a filing task. Every submission is preceded by an independent chain-of-title review back to the original inventor or applicant, and followed by a Notice of Recordation check confirming the Office's record actually matches what was filed.
